Ape Seated HN140
Charles Noke inaugurated the HN range of Doulton animals in 1912. From an early age, the future art director had a fascination for modeling animals while still in school and would borrow clay from the nearby Worcester factory to sculpt his figures. One of the early animals introduced into this new range of animals was the ape. Since apes are native to Africa and Asia, the fascination with these animals living far away from the English country side must have been exhilarating for Noke. Unfortunately, many of the early models issued had very short runs and are extremely rare today. The realistic colors and attention to detail is the true hallmark of Doulton animals.
