The Yeomen Warders of Her Majestys Royal Palace and Fortress, the Tower of London popularly known as Beefeaters are ceremonial guardians. Traditionally they were responsible for looking after any prisoners at the Tower and safeguarding the British Crown Jewels, but today they act as tour guides and are a tourist attraction in their own right. Beefeaters began guarding the Tower in 1485 and today there are 35 Yeomen Warders and one Chief Warder. Every evening, the Beefeaters participate in the Ceremony of the Keys. Since the 14th century at exactly 9:53 pm the chief Yeoman Warder meets the Military Escort to secure the main gates of the Tower and take the keys to the Queen for safekeeping.
