Phoebe Anne Moses (1860 - 1926) learned to shoot at the age of eight and helped support her family by killing game for a hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio. At 15, she defeated professional marksman Frank Butler in a shooting contest. She married him in 1876 and became a regular performer in shooting exhibitions, using the stage name Annie Oakley. She was a star of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show from 1885 - 1901, when she was injured in a train accident and forced to retire. During World War I she trained American soldiers in marksmanship.">
