In German legend, a stranger came to the town of Hamelin and told the mayor he would rid the village of rats for a sum of money. The Pied Piper walked through town playing a flute, and the rats followed him to the Weser River, where they drowned. When the mayor refused to pay him, the Pied Piper played his flute again, and this time the village children followed him into a cave, never to be seen again.
