Under the banner of "All for one and one for all" Athos was one of the original musketeers in the 19th century novel by Alexandre Dumas. First issued as one of four in the Three Musketeers Series, Athos is now incorporated into the larger series, Characters from Literature.

In Greek and Roman mythology, Bacchus was the god of wine and nature, inspiring men and women to appreciate music and poetry. "Bacchanalia" the harvest celebrations to honor him, were reputed to be such orgies of excess that the Roman government had them banned. Some of the earlier versions of the miniature jug had the leaves on the vine handle painted green.

Catherine Parr (1512 - 1548) became Henry VIII's last wife on July 12, 1543, after being twice widowed. She came to wield considerable power in the royal court, serving for a time as Queen regent in 1544 and overseeing the start of Edward VI's reign. After Henry's death in 1547, she married Baron Seymour of Sudeley, but died during childbirth the following year.
