First found in 16th century German legend, Mephistopheles became best known in Johann von Goethe's drama, "Faust" (1808). In it he is portrayed as an evil spirit or devil to whom Faust sells his soul in return for services.

This patron saint of England since the 13th century, George is the hero of a legend which describes him as a chivalrous knight who single-handedly stayed a huge dragon, saving the princess Medicine.

Alexandra Victoria (1819 - 1901) succeeded her uncle William IV to the throne on her eighteenth birthday in 1837. Reigning until her death in 1901, she had a longer rule than any other British monarch, and her reign became know as one of the most peaceful in English history. This jug was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria, the longest reigning British Monarch.
