An American publicist , scientist and statesman , Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790) was a signatory to the peace between Britain and the U.S.A. following the War of Independence. In 1748 he left his printing business to his foreman and devoted his life to science. His most famous discovery, that lightning is electricity, was accomplished with the simple objects of a knife and a key. It lead to the invention of the lightning rod, still used today to divert lightning harmlessly into the ground. This jug was modeled for "The Queen Table," Royal Doulton's exhibit at the United Kingdom Showcase at Walt Disney's Epcot Center in Orlando, Florida. It was sold exclusively to Epcot tourists visiting the exhibition during 1982, then released for general sale in 1983.">

The Yeomen of the Guard and warders of the Tower of London are colloquially referred to as Beefeaters. The name "Beefeater" came from a visiting Grand Duke who was astonished by the large amounts of beef eaten by the Yeoman Guards. The monarch's cipher, GR, at the base of the handle is an abbreviation of George Rex, for King George VI. After his death in 1953, the cipher was changed to ER (Elizabeth Regina), for Queen Elizabeth II.
