He became the hopeful leader of the Jacobites, adherents to the Stuart line, and led them in an unsuccessful uprising in 1745. After being defeated at Culloden Moor in 1746, he escaped to France with the help of Flora McDonald. Charles roamed Europe, a drunkard, until settling in Rome where he passed the remainder of his life.
