Phoebe Anne Moses (1860 - 1926) learned to shoot at the age of eight and helped support her family by killing game for a hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio. At 15, she defeated professional marksman Frank Butler in a shooting contest. She married him in 1876 and became a regular performer in shooting exhibitions, using the stage name Annie Oakley. She was a star of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show from 1885 - 1901, when she was injured in a train accident and forced to retire. During World War I she trained American soldiers in marksmanship.

William Frederick Cody (1846 - 1917) was a scout, plainsman, soldier in the Civil War, hotelier, rancher and showman. His expert marksmanship as a buffalo hunter earned him his nickname Buffalo Bill. In 1883, Cody and others formed "Buffalo Bill Wild West Show," a theatrical shooting exhibition, which became very successful and traveled through the U.S. and Europe.

This is an excellent example of the literary character designs of early character jugs. In Dickens' Pickwick Papers, Sergeant Buzfuz was the counsel of Mrs. Bardell in the breach of promise suit she brought against Mr. Pickwick.

Geronimo (1829 - 1909) was the last leader of the Apache Indians while they were still independent of American Colonial rule. Although he fought many battles to protect he freedom of his people, in 1886 he surrendered to General Nelson Miles, and Apache territory became the state of Arizona.

In Charles Dickens' classic, "David Copperfield," Wilkins Micawber is Copperfield's landlord and friend. A sanguine idler, Micawber unmasks Uriah Heep as a villain and is rewarded with passage to Australia, where he settles happily in a prominent neighborhood.

In 1837 Charles Dickens novel, "The Pickwick Papers," Sam Weller was a boot employed at the White Hart Inn. He became a faithful aide and valet to Mr. Pickwick and eventually married Napkins' housemaid.

After serving as a Union scout in the American Civil War, James Butler Hickock (1837 - 1876) became a marshal and then sheriff of several western frontier towns. An excellent gunman, he earned his nickname from his trigger-happy method of upholding the law at the many shootouts that erupted from poker games. He toured briefly with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show (1872 - 1873) and was later murdered at Deadwood.

The wonderful characters of Dickens' novels were the inspiration for many early jug designs. Captain Edward Cuttle was an eccentric English gentlemen in "Dombey and Son" (1846), who is best known for saying "When found, make a note of it."

Paul McCartney (b. 1942) was a singer, songwriter and the bass player with the Beatles, until they disbanded in 1970. He then performed with his own band, Wing, until 1981, and since then has remained active in the music field. This jug was issued only in Great Britain, due to copyright reasons.
