John Peel (1776 - 1854) was a famous English huntsman, known for his enthusiasm, skill and hospitality. Fond of drink, he hosted large, popular, post-hunt celebration. Peel has been immortalized in the song "D'ye ken John Peel," written by John Woodcock Graves.

"Old King Cole was a Merry Old Soul" are the words of the nursery rhyme that inspired the design of this jug. The collar frill was remodeled around 1939 and Variation Two can be found with both deep and shallow white ruff modeling's.
