The Doulton Company, which would later become Royal Doulton after King Edward VII conferred an honorable royal warrant upon the pottery studio, was founded in 1815. The first art pottery was produced at Lambeth just outside of London and Burslem in Stoke-on-Trent, England during the 1880's. Charles Noke, who became Royal Doulton's Art Director and one of the most prolific artists associated with the company, was responsible for modeling a majority of the early figurines and character studies. Since Royal Doulton's founding, thousands of unique hand sculpted figures have been created during the company's esteemed legacy of excellence. Countless hand sculpted variations of animals, figures, Beatrix Potter characters, Bunnykins, Flambé, Kingsware, Character and Toby Jugs, have become the signature art wares associated with the company.

The first Royal Doulton figurines were produced at Lambeth in London and Burslem in Stoke-on-Trent during the 1880's. Charles Noke, who would later become Art Director, was responsible for modeling many of the early figures and for developing the company's famous HN collection that was launched in 1913. In the beginning, Noke commissioned figures from a number of independent sculptors but in 1920 secured the talents of Leslie Harradine, who became the mainstay of the collection for more than 30 years. Since the 1890's, more than 2,500 different figures have been added to the range and are collected around the world.

Noke also developed Kingsware which was produced from 1898 through 1939. The rich, brown effects of the Kingsware glaze were achieved by painting the design in colored slip on the inside of the plaster mold, then the dark slip was added to form the body. The Kingsware subjects are numerous and always full of character. The Doulton Kingsware series includes whisky decanters, loving cups, tankards, tea and coffee sets, match strikers, tobacco jars, water jugs and miniatures. The unique Kingware glaze is one of the most interesting series from the Doulton Studios. No other factory in the world has been able to recreate the same lustrous finish.

The standard Royal Doulton character jug and toby jug range, featuring popular personalities, has included more than 300 different subjects creating an exciting collecting challenge. The ambitious and keen collector will try to find them all, but as the range continues to expand the task becomes more daunting! Royal Doulton's brilliant creative director, Charles Noke, was well into his seventies when he introduced character jugs in 1933. His fertile imagination was still working overtime in 1939 when he adapted his most famous characters into a collection of useful gifts known as derivatives, which included musical jugs, tobacco jars, sugar bowls, toothpick holders and teapots.

The wonderful world of Bunnykins by Royal Doulton is full of exciting characters and thrilling adventures. The story of Bunnykins was originally based on a family of eight rabbits and their everyday adventures in the village of Little Twitching. Sister Mary Barbara, an English convent nun, first created the Bunnykins family in 1934. Over the years a number of other very talented artists have contributed to the success of the figurine range. Bunnykins figures are collected and cherished by young and old all over the world. Each charming figure has been skillfully handmade and hand decorated using multiple colors and a high level of detail.

In 1893 Beatrix Potter wrote a picture letter about the adventures of a rabbit named Peter to amuse a sick young child. Now, more than a century later, Peter is one of the world's best loved nursery characters. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was privately printed in 1901 when Beatrix failed to find a publisher. Her search for a publisher ended in 1902 when an agreement was reached with Fredrick Warne and Company to produce a color edition of her story. The book was an immediate success and has continuously remained in print. In 1947 the directors of the Beswick Studio gave their approval for the first figure modeled, Jemima Puddleduck. Other characters from the tales written by Beatrix Potter were soon put into production. Through the years the collection grew to more than 100 different characters carrying Beswick, New Beswick or Royal Albert backstamps.

Halcyon Days enamel boxes are the latest treasures available through Seaway China. They are meticulously designed and crafted in England following enameling techniques perfected more than two hundred years ago. Just as the hand-painted originals were coveted by the aristocracy of the Georgian period, today Halcyon Days Enamels are prized by Royalty, Heads of State and collectors around the world for their delicate images and fine craftsmanship. Six separate inspections in the production process ensure each piece meets the strictest standards of quality. The process is labor intensive and to achieve the renowned mellow, creamy finish of the piece, each must receive numerous firings. Halcyon Days enamels are incomparable collector’s items and are destined to become the cherished antiques of tomorrow.
