SERIESWARE

At the end of the 19th century, Charles Noke’s rich imagination was busy at work creating ideas for the launch of Royal Doulton’s new Seriesware range. The basic premise of Seriesware was to produce pieces which were not only decorative and beautiful, but also served a practical purpose, such as tea kettles, dishes, hat pin holders, vases, and innumerable other such items. Characters from literature, history, folklore and music were the inspiration for many of the new patterns. Popular sports and leisurely activities such as golfing, hunting, fishing and motoring were also illustrated on a variety of wares. The list of subjects is endless and demonstrates Noke’s inherent gift for creating items with popular appeal. Each series of pieces could depict as few as two to as many as twenty different scenes of the same theme, creating a stimulating challenge for the keen collector!
