In the late 1870's, it was Henry Doulton who insisted that each creative artist be given the utmost scope for individual expression, unhampered by himself or anyone else at the Lambeth Pottery. "Those who have imagination, let them cultivate it; for imagination is a valuable gift," he stated. Due to this liberal spirit on the part of Henry Doulton, Royal Doulton collectors today have an incalculable number of unique examples of the wares that he sponsored. Each piece of individually designed and decorated Doulton Ware bears the monogram, initials or signature of the artist, and often the marks of the assistants responsible for bringing these Doulton wonders to life.
