To the Toby Jug collector, the pinnacle of any collection is owning the original set of World War I Allied Commanders Tobys created by the Wilkinson Royal Pottery in Staffordshire, England. David Lloyd George, Prime Minister of Great Britain during most of the First World War, is depicted sitting down, wearing the ceremonial dress uniform of the First Lord of the Treasury (the P.M.’s official title), and holding an explosive shell titled “SHELL OUT!” (a possible play on words and reference to the scandal that rocked his administration, involving the sale of noble peerages to those who “shelled out” the appropriate amount of money). Originally produced in 1917, these Toby Jugs are considered some of the finest examples ever produced by an English ceramic company.
