The Moor is a magnificent portrait that’s full of mood, dignity and detail. You can sense the pride in those glaring eyes and folding arms, and admire the smooth lines of his impressive hooded Arab robes with their sweeping curves and brilliant flambé color. This is a top quality small-size Prestige Figure in Royal Doulton bone china, originally modeled as a larger piece by Charles Noke in 1952.
In 1904, Royal Doulton unveiled its first collection of flambé. This exciting new glaze, first created by Chinese potters during the Sung Dynasty (960 A.D. -1280 A.D.), was immediately acclaimed by collectors around the world. Today, the Burslem Art Wares Studio has revived all the very best of the flambé glaze.
Royal Doulton’s limited edition Prestige figures exemplify the highest quality, craftsmanship, and artistry in figure making. More than just collectables, Prestige figures are genuine works of art that can take months to create and decorate in detail. Each piece is handmade to order by the Royal Doulton artisans in England. Each limited edition is individually numbered and comes with a certificate of authenticity, and the moulds are broken once an edition is fully produced.
In the early 1900s, after years of painstaking work, Royal Doulton re-discovered the art of flamb glazing first created by Chinese master potters of ancient dynasties. The flamb glaze was created by firing a secret formula at extremely high kiln temperatures. Nowhere was it seen to greater effect than in this grouping of character studies from faraway mystical lands. No longer produced, flamb pieces are coveted by collectors around the world for their distinctive red glaze.
