Ask a dozen people why they collect Royal Doulton Character Jugs and you’ll receive a dozen different answers! For some people, it’s because they evoke memories or reflect an interest. For others, it’s simply because they love to own something that encompasses the unique history of Royal Doulton’s rich past. One area of interest for jug collectors are the white, undecorated character jugs which were produced as a result of the Board of Trade “Utility” regulations which came into force during the Second World War. From 1942 until 1952 these restrictions meant that only plain, undecorated pottery could be sold in the U.K. market. All the decorated wares were sent overseas to help with the war effort in the “drive for dollars.”
