A late 19th century Royal Doulton Faience Vase, polychrome enameled with flowers, hand painted in a yellow, orange, blue and green colorway, and beautifully decorated with Daffodils. Artist mark, “M. Welsby.” Faience is the English name for fine tin-glazed ceramic ware—in particular, decorated pottery on a delicate pale buff earthenware body. The invention of a white pottery glaze suitable for painted decoration, by the addition of an oxide of tin to the slip of a lead glaze, was a major advance in the history of pottery.
