Nicknamed â€œMonty,â€ Bernard Montgomery was a revered British Army Officer. He commanded the Eighth Army in the North African Desert from August 1942 until the final Allied victory in Tunisia. His command included the Battle of El Alamein, a turning point in the Campaign. After the war, he became Commander-in-Chief of the British Army of the Rhine and then Chief of the Imperial General Staff.
