Robert Browning first published The Pied Piper of Hamelin in 1845. The poem refers to his ‘Gipsy coat of red and yellow’ and was based on the old German legend of the mystery piper who freed the town of a plague of rats in 1284. As consequence for not paying his fee, the piper charmed away all the children in the town.
