Sir Henry Doulton (Double Handle) D7054 (blue, black, yellow and brown coloration). Designed by William K. Harper. Series: Two-handled jugs, issued 1997 in limited edition of 1,997. Size: 7″H (large)
In the mid 1830’s, Henry Doulton (1820 – 1897) joined his father’s firm just in time to capitalize on the expanding market that was developing in London for modern sanitation products. The manufacturer of stoneware sewer and water pipes led Doulton and Company, as they were known after 1854, to became a large and flourishing concern. John Doulton retired around this time leaving Doulton and Company in the hands of his son Henry. In the 1860’s, with decorative wares expanding, Henry Doulton was persuaded to hire students from the Lambeth School of Art as designers and decorators of the new ornamental wares his company was introducing. Their outstanding creations heralded the beginning of the studio-art movement. This large size two-handled jug was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Sir Henry Dolton in 1897. This jug carries a special backstamp for the centenary year and was issued in limited edition of 1,997.
