Royal Doulton began producing the figure of “The Laird” in 1961, with a green and brown colorway. This unusual prototype has a red, brown, and black colorway. The Laird (a Scottish landowner, ranking just below a baron) leans on his walking stick, and is dressed in a plaid kilt, wide-cuffed jacket, and high wool socks, with a highland blanket draped over his shoulder. The figure was designed by Mary Nicoll in 1969.
