Sculptor Valerie Annand has created this bone china figure, bringing together the striking elements of the traditional Welsh costume. Seaway China is the exclusive retailer in North America of this beautiful handmade and hand decorated limited edition figure. The Welsh costume originated in Wales in the late eighteenth century and is based on the traditional attire comprising of a red jacket, tall black hat, long skirt and a white apron. Traditionally worn by country women, farm workers and servants, the dress was designed for durability. Today, the costumes are worn by many schoolgirls as part of the celebrations on St. David’s Day. The Harp that accompanies this figure is recognized by many as the national instrument of Wales and its musical heritage is deeply entrenched in the Welsh culture. The Harp’s popularity today reflects the desire to keep this musical legacy alive.
