In German legend, a stranger came to the town of Hamelin and told the mayor he would rid the village of rats for a sum of money. The Pied Piper walked through town playing a flute and the rats followed him to the West river where they drowned. When the mayor refused to pay him, the Pied Piper played his flute again leading the children of the village to a cave, never to be seen again.
