Punch and Judy Man D6590 (brown hat; green coat; yellow scarf). Designed by David B. Biggs, issued 1964 – 1969. Size: 7″H (Large)
Punch and Judy is a popular glove-puppet show for children, featuring Mr. Punch and his wife, Judy. Presented on a stage in a tall booth covered with striped canvas, the puppeteer, known as the professor, has Punch, who remains on stage throughout the performance on his right hand. He works the rest of the characters with his left hand, bringing them on stage one at a time. Punch and Judy men were once familiar sights in large English cities, setting up their traveling stage on street corners, giving a half hour show, then moving on to the next neighborhood. Modern performers of Punch and Judy are traditionally seaside entertainers, found in British holiday resorts during the summer. Modeler David Biggs created this colorful character jug in 1963 with the always entertaining Mr. Punch on the handle.
