The Samurai were initially a hired police force serving the provinces of Japan over a thousand years ago. By the mid-12th century, the military class had risen in power and was gaining greater control of the central government. In 1192, the Shogun (or Samurai ruler) assumed control of Japan, while the emperor was relegated to figurehead status.
