A soldier, explorer, writer and businessman, Walter Raleigh (1552 – 1618) was one of the most colorful characters in English history. A captain in the British army, Raleigh was one of Queen Elizabeth’s favorites—she gave him a 12,000 acre estate in Ireland, granted him trade privileges between England and America and made him a knight in 1585. This 1936 earthenware sculpture of Raleigh by the talented Leslie Harradine—one of Royal Doulton’s greatest modelers—is a great example expert modeling combined with a rich color palette.
