The St. Bernard is a very large dog originally bred for rescue and as a working dog. The name “St. Bernard” originates from a traveler’s hospice on the St. Bernard Pass in the Western Alps between Switzerland and Italy. The pass was named after an 11th century monk, Bernard of Menthon.
