Churchill was the Prime Minister of the U.K. from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th century. Churchill took the lead in warning about Nazi Germany and in campaigning for rearmament. Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain on May 10, 1940, Churchill became Prime Minister. His steadfast refusal to consider defeat helped inspire British resistance. His close relationship with President Roosevelt was vital to survival early in the war.
