First appearing as a serial in 1881 under the title “The Sea Cook or Treasure Island”, this is the novel that established Robert Louis Stevenson as a leading fiction writer. The tale is told through the eyes of Jim Hawkins, a young lad whose mother runs the “Admiral Benbow”, a tavern in the West Country. When an old buccaneer comes to stay the inn is invaded by his former comrades led by the blind pirate Pew, searching for the map of Captain Flints buried treasure which the old man has hidden. Jim outwits them and escapes with the chart to Squire Trelawney who sets sail for Treasure Island with his friend Dr Livesay and Jim on the schooner “Hispaniola”. Unknown to them many of the crew are pirates recruited by the cook, the one-legged Long John Silver, who plans to seize the ship and the treasure. The plot is discovered by Jim and after a series of adventures the buccaneers are overcome with the aid of Ben Gunn, a marooned pirate.
Depicted on the jug are two pirates burying the treasure-chest, their longboat drawn up on the beach and their ship waiting off-shore, while on the other side Long John Silver (with his parrot), Jim and some of the crew try to find the treasure from the map. A sketch of the chart appears on the base.
