Hark The Herald Angels Sing HN5859 – Royal Doulton Figurine

The figurine Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is a lively portrait of a festive duo dressed warmly as they perform their carols on a frosty winter’s night. Holding her Christmas Carols song book, the carol singer wears a berry-red dress with an ermine trimmed coat in holly-green, and her green bonnet is trimmed with a red ribbon. She is accompanied in her performance by a violin player whose smart attire includes a long dark green coat, a vibrant orange waistcoat and a top hat. 
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is one of the most popular of carols; written by Charles Wesley to be sung on Christmas Day, it was first published in 1739. Over the years the lyrics have been amended and new music was composed for the carol in the 1840s. A cantata written by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840, commemorating the invention of the printing press, and later adapted by William Cummings to fit the lyrics was the inspiration behind the new melody.
