I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day is an enchanting study of a carol singer and her young daughter performing during the festive season. Wearing a long holly-green dress and a red, ermine-trimmed, cut-away coat with shoulder cape, that’s buttoned up to her chin, and holding a song book, the carol singer is posed merrily singing. Her daughter sits in a traditional toboggan, listening to the carol and she is warmly dressed in a fur trimmed coat, hat and mittens.
I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day is based on a poem written by American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow on Christmas Day 1863. Written during the American Civil War, when Longfellow was nursing his son who had been injured during the conflict, the poem thoughtfully reflects on the consequences of war but ends with the wish that the sound of bells ringing on Christmas Day carries hope for peace among men. The words were set to music by English musician Joseph Calkin in 1872, and various different arrangements have been recorded by artists such as Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra from the mid-20th century onwards.
